JOEL PETER WITKIN
USA, 1939

Joel Peter Witkin fue técnico en un estudio especializado en el proceso Dye Transfer, y más tarde asistente en dos estudios fotográficos. Seguidamente trabajó como fotógrafo en el ejército.

En 1967 decidió trabajar como fotógrafo independiente y actuó como fotógrafo oficial de City Walls Inc. de Nueva York. Posteriormente realizó estudios en la cooper School of fine Arts, de NY, donde obtuvo en 1974 el título de Bachelor of Arts.

Después de haber obtenido una beca de poesía en la Columbia University, finalizó sus estudios en la Universidad de Nuevo Mexico, con el título Master of Fine Arts. Actualmente enseña fotografía.

Witkin alborotó la opinión pública en los años ochenta, con fotografías de personas deformes, partes de cadáveres y puestas en escena de acontecimientos de la historia eclesiástica que citan conocidas obras maestras.

Muchos de sus trabajos hacen pensar en escenas del pintor El Bosco. Desde una posición marginal, ha logrado con los años establecerse en el mundo del arte reconocido.
