We love traveling around Ontario, doing a bit of reconnaissance work and scouting out new-to-us locations for my travel and nature photography. After a brief tour around Hamilton, we made our way over to the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve to meet up with Zuzu + Nevin for an adventurous hike near the falls.
The Niagara Glen is a unique spot of beauty deep in the Great Gorge that has been a designated Nature Reserve since 1992. Stairways lead to 4 km (2.5 mi) of paths that wind through a pristine pocket of Carolinian Forest, past boulders left behind as the Falls eroded through the area thousands of years ago.
The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve overlooks the Niagara River Whirlpool, a unique natural phenomenon that you must see to believe! Thousands of years ago, as the Niagara River slowly eroded its way through the Niagara Escarpment, creating the Great Gorge, a right-angle turn in the river’s path forced the rushing water into a deep counter-clockwise spin.
Here is the beginning of our adventure at Niagara Glen Nature Reserve:
As you can see, it is one of the best preserved remaining example of Southern Ontario’s original Carolinian forest.
The well laid out trails are color coded with the estimated completion times so you can pick the trail to suit your style. We were following the yellow one.
The Glen stretches along the current course of the river, and thus offers plenty of vantage points to see the rapids that characterize this stretch of water.
The rock formations on the forest floor created good opportunities to include reveals with some of my images which can help to add a feeling of depth.
Forest lighting usually presents opportunities to capture the detail on leaves.

Thank you Zuzu + Nevin for sharing a part of your weekend with us! We are so looking forward to revisiting more Niagara parks with you guys.
